My Emmy predictions:
Outstanding Comedy Series: Modern Family
Outstanding Drama Series: Mad Men
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series: Neil Patrick Harris, How I Met Your Mother
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series: Jane Lynch, Glee
Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series: Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory
Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series: Toni Collette, United States of Tara
Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series: Matthew Fox, Lost
Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series: Julianna Marguiles, The Good Wife
8:12PM

After a so-so opening (although I loved Betty White teaching Jon Hamm dance moves), I’m pleasantly surprised to see Eric Stonestreet win for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy as Modern Family‘s Cameron. Sweet moments: his co-star (and fellow nominee) Jesse Tyler Ferguson crying and Eric’s shoutout to his parents.

8:20PM
Sofia Vergara is elated to announce Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd’s deserved Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series win for the brilliant Modern Family pilot.

8:24PM
No surprise here: Jane Lynch wins Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Glee. Love her comment about being Buddhist in a sense and even though she’s not a Buddhist they seem like a very calm people.

8:34PM
Ryan Murphy wins his first Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series for the Glee pilot. He offers a sweet dedication to his teachers “who taught me to sing and finger-paint.”

8:36PM
Modern Family‘s 3-D gag is awesome. The George Clooney gags are better.

8:38PM
Thrilled that Jim Parsons won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for The Big Bang Theory. Finally — the Academy didn’t give it to Tony Shalhoub. My scream would’ve been audible in space.

8:44PM
Ha! Neil Patrick Harris thanks the Academy for letting a gay man host for the second year in a a row.

8:45PM
Dang — I originally had Edie Falco as my prediction to win for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, then changed it to Toni Collette. At least I did better with my Oscar predictions.

9:04PM
Doh! Forgot to pick my choices for Outstanding Supporting Actor and Actress in a Drama Series. For actor, I’m going with Terry O’Quinn, Lost. For actress, Christina Hendricks, Mad Men.

9:06PM
Got that one wrong, didn’t I? Congrats to Aaron Paul from Breaking Bad.

9:10PM
Like Emily Deschanel with the bangs, like Nathan Fillion in a tux.

9:11PM
And I got that prediction wrong, too. Congrats to Archie Panjabi for The Good Wife

9:13PM
Matthew Fox was robbed, although how can you not be happy for Bryan Cranston for his Breaking Bad win?

9:15PM
This is quite possibly the most boring Emmy broadcast I’ve seen in years. I might stick around long enough for the True Blood presenters and then bail. We’ll see.

9:46PM
Still waiting for the True Blood presenters. Grr. And the only real highlight of the last half hour was host Jimmy Fallon’s musical tribute to 24, Law & Order, and Lost.

9:51PM
Love Stephen Colbert’s reference to The Human Centipede.

9:53PM
The Daily Show With Jon Stewart wins for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series. And crap — on-screen tout says 22 more minutes until the True Blood peeps appear.  Bah. This is when my DVR will take over.

10:00PM
George Clooney receives the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award. Time to surf while he talks.

10:17PM
The In Memoriam segment is starting, with Jewel singing a song she wrote for a friend who passed away from cancer. Wonder which’ll make me cry first: the song or a particular actor’s montage?

10:22PM
It was the ones who died too young who got me — Corey Haim, Brittany Murphy, Gary Coleman, as well as grand dames (our own hometown hero) Patricia Neal, Dixie Carter, and Lynn Redgrave. The song Jewel sang, “Hole in My Heart (Shape of You)” was beautiful, too. You can watch a live performance of it here.

10:34PM
Very lame intro from Jimmy Fallon, but Stephen Moyer, Anna Paquin and Alexander Skarsgard all look great. And apparently only Stephen is using his native accent. In an aside, mon dieu, Alexander is TALL.

10:38PM
Hoo-ah! What the hell happened to Al Pacino? His hair looks like he stuck a finger in an electrical socket, while his skin looks like he went to the Oompa Loompa Tanning Salon. Yowza.

10:50PM
Not much happening on the Emmys so I’m prepping blog posts for later in the week. And now I know why I don’t liveblog the Emmys, only the Oscars.

10:51PM
Mad Men wins Outstanding Drama Series. Poor Lost is basically leaving empty-handed tonight. I’ve all but given up hope Dexter will ever win.

10:57PM
Yes — Modern Family wins for Outstanding Comedy Series. At least the Emmys are ending on a good note tonight.

And now I’m off to finish writing blog posts for later in the week. Goodnight!
