Recovery

Song Lyric of the Day:

I wonder how am I still here / And I don’t want to move a thing / It might change my memory

Dido / “Here With Me”

I’m tired. I’m still recovering from our 5-day Thanksgiving weekend. It was great seeing our families and friends, and getting fed lots of great food. The not-so-great part is that our usual 9-hour drive turned into an 11-hour ordeal—both driving down and coming home.

Our drive down on Wednesday was going well until the weather took a turn for the worse. All of a sudden we’re driving in a heavy rain complete with accompanying fog. Unfortunately, the majority of our drive was hampered by this weather. Rich handled the worst leg of it like a pro. I would’ve pulled over to the side of the road, hit the hazards, and waited it out. We got into town about 11PM, dropped Snoops and Yum Yum off at my parents’ house, and then headed to Samantha’s house with Caleb. It was our first time seeing the house she bought a few months ago, her first. We both approved—it’s a perfect fit for her. Sadly, her dog, Cyrus, hated his cousin, so Thursday morning we packed up and headed to Rich’s parents’ house.

The weekend passed in a blur. Some highlights:

  • Thursday night Thanksgiving at my parents’ house, complete with embarrassing, hilarious videos of my first (and only) fashion show and my sisters’ ballet recital
  • Early Friday morning realized what a weenie Caleb is because a garden hose scared him
  • Friday morning visit to Chris and Kirsten’s first home (a great fit for them)
  • Friday afternoon lunch and shopping with Samantha
  • Friday night Thanksgiving at Rich’s parents’ house followed by a quick viewing of the first TV show I did
  • Friday night sleepover at Samantha’s house watching “Dawn of the Dead
  • Saturday morning going to McKay’s Used Books, The Book Market, and Linens-N-Things with Mom and Vanessa
  • Saturday afternoon lunch at Big Ed’s Pizza (yay!) with Rich, Tamara, and Brent
  • Saturday night shrimp scampi dinner at my parents’ house followed by a slideshow of my Las Vegas trip pics
  • Later Saturday night FREE viewing of “Team America: World Police” with Rich, Tamara, and Brent (Oh, how I miss free movies!)
  • Even later Saturday night decided Caleb is not a pit bull, but a pitiful bull, after Doug’s (Rich’s dad) revelation that a 1 1/2 foot-tall decorative lawn reindeer scared Caleb during a walk
  • Sunday morning birthday breakfast for Mom at IHOP with Dad, Rich, Samantha, Vanessa, Ken, Tamara, and Brent

After breakfast it was time to hit the road once again. While the weather was beautiful, the traffic was heinous. We’ve decided that for the drive home for Christmas, we’re going the Carolina way. Hopefully, it will be a vast improvement traffic-wise over the usual I64-to I81-to I40 drive.

It was great to finally get home on Sunday night, even if it was a full two hours later than we expected to get home. There’s nothing like sleeping in your own bed, especially after an exhausting day of travel. And boy, I don’t know how I survived 5 days without internet access.

Now we just need to get around to unpacking.
