In for the Weekend

Well, it’s supposed to snow again this weekend. Even if it’s just an inch or two, Rich and I are planning on staying in. Wednesday night it snowed maybe half an inch, but it started during rush hour. My drive took 2 1/2 hours and Rich’s took 3 1/2 hours, which is really pathetic considering I drove 26 miles and he drove 15. Thank goodness we made it home safely. But with those awful evening drives fresh in our minds, we’d rather play it safe. We’ve got plenty of stuff to do around the house, both solo and joint projects, and still have 2 Netflix rentals to watch, Collateral and Trainspotting.

Tonight we watched Resident Evil: Apocalypse. I think this was one of those cases where the sequel is better than the original. Due to the first movie’s modest box office success, the budget was increased from $35M for the first movie to $50M for the sequel. The payoff of a bigger budget is that the CGI is noticeably improved over the first, the sets better, even the makeup is improved–I could almost hear my skin crawling whenever Nemesis showed up. I even think the zombies were scarier this time around, too. Alice (Milla Jovovich), having survived the initial outbreak of the T-Virus, teams up with a cop and special agent to rescue a little girl and get out of Raccoon City alive. The script, by Paul W.S. Anderson (who also wrote and directed the first film), manages to make this a stand-alone movie for people unfamiliar with the games on which it is based while incorporating elements familiar to those of us who have played them. I think bringing in a new, first-time director, Alexander Witt, was a good move in that it created a fresh perspective; the movie didn’t feel like a repeat of the first. Resident Evil: Apocalypse promises nothing more than a fun, scary ride, based on a wildly popular horror survival video game. And on that count, it definitely delivers.
