Song Lyric of the Day:

Corporate religion / Televangahypnotism / Suffer till you die / For the sweet-bye-and-bye / Science and technology, the new mythology / Look deep inside / Empty / We are the children of concrete and steel / This is the place where the truth is concealed / This is the time when the lie is revealed / Everything is possible, but nothing is real

Living Colour / “Type”

I got a really interesting comment on my Brad Pitt-Jennifer Aniston entry the other day. It was posted by a freelance journalist (very cool) who pointed out that we, the public, are as much to blame as the media for overpaid celebrities and professional athletes. And she was right. While I understand that famous faces bring in the big bucks for movie studios, athletic clothing companies, advertisers, and whatnot, if we weren’t willing to pay $10 for that matinee ticket or $125 for that pair of sneakers, maybe the prices wouldn’t be what they are. It’s a good thing Rich and I don’t go to sporting events, because $50 and up for a ticket is just too much. We barely go to the movies anymore because the matinee now costs $13 for both of us—the matinee! I won’t get started on concession prices. I used to work at a movie theater and know that’s where most of a theater’s money comes from, precisely because the expensive ticket prices are where movie stars’ big salaries come from. So theaters charge $4.25 for a kiddie soda to try and make money.

The big question is, if we refuse to pay outrageous prices for entertainment and sporting events, would the bigwigs in charge lower prices? I don’t think they would, but it’s nice to think that we can try to make a difference by taking a stand against overinflated prices. I won’t even buy a music CD if it’s priced more than $9.99. My favorite CD of last year, Hot Fuss by The Killers, was bought on sale for $6.98 at Target. I purchase the majority of my hardcover books once they have become bargain books. By waiting a few months, I can get that $26.95 James Patterson novel for $6.98, which nowadays is cheaper than the paperback costs. Rich and I tend to buy DVDs we want when they are on sale. I don’t know how much of a dent we’re making for the companies that put these products out, but we feel good about “saving” money where and when we can. And for at least trying to stick to our principles.

Caleb is thrashing Snoops in the face with his now half-headless Boobah. I’m going to try to play some “Silent Hill 2” until “CSI” starts at 9. I say try because I’ll end it early if I get too creeped out.
