Why Can’t This Show Get Arrested?

This fire is out of control / I’m going to burn this city / Burn this city / If this fire is out of control / Then I I’m out of control and I burn

It’s official–the powers that be at Fox have decided to cut the Emmy award-winning “Arrested Development“‘s season short. That means only 18 episodes instead of the standard 22. In the name of all that is good and holy, I just have to ask WHY?!?

Turns out that because the sneak preview of the new (universally panned) cartoon “American Dad” scored good ratings after the Super Bowl (duh–what wouldn’t?), Fox has decided to bump “Arrested Development” off the schedule early so that “American Dad” can be sandwiched between “The Simpsons” and “Family Guy.”

As those who know me are aware, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE “Arrested Development.” Simply put, it’s the funniest, most original sitcom to come along since “Scrubs.” (Take note, Fox–NBC hasn’t always treated “Scrubs” all that well, either, but they have officially renewed it for next year, its fifth season–despite not having blockbuster ratings).

So I’m taking this very personally. And not too well. I did my best last year to get those close to me watching and it worked. Because of me, Rich, Brent, Tamara, Vanessa, and Mom are all hooked. But more people need to give it a shot! And now, because of a stupid cartoon’s easy ratings score, “Arrested Development” is in danger of being cancelled.

So, please, please, please just watch it! Give an episode or two a try; it airs at 8:30PM EST Sunday. If you like the movie “The Royal Tenenbaums,” you’ll love this show. While all the characters are morally suspect, the actors still manage to make them likable. Appreciate sarcasm, brilliant slapstick, rewarding sight gags, and perfect deadpan delivery? Then WATCH! As star Jason Bateman said, “Arrested Development” is like “The Royal Tenenbaums” with a rap sheet.

I’ve even gone to Petition Online’s site to document my support for the show. An encouraging sign is that since I signed it 3 days ago, almost 5000 more signatures have been added. So the word is spreading. I love “Family Guy,” but after the first five minutes it was obvious that “American Dad” was an inferior, unfunny copy. Needless to say, I won’t be watching it.

More later. Because I’m that riled up.
