If a greater wave shall fall and fall upon us all / Then between the sand and stone could you make it on your own

Any freelance writers out there? I’m really trying to make a go of this freelance writing thing, and talking to someone with experience would be wonderful. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. I know the part about write, write, write, but I need to know what to do after that–how to market my writing, how to find outlets for what I write, etc. Hello, Ariel, are you there?

This afternoon I reworked a cover letter and submitted it along with my resume to a Knoxville-based publication. I’d be happy with either freelance or a full-time position, since I’ve always wanted to work in the publishing industry. He!!, at this point, I’d be happy with an interview. My next plan of attack is to draft and send an email to our newspaper’s TV critic. I plan on basically just introducing myself, outlining my writing interests, and asking if I can bend his ear a bit. Then this weekend I need to outline and finish fleshing out some articles I’ve started. Need to build that portfolio!

I managed to be productive in our home office from this afternoon into early evening. After an obligatory trip to our local Wal-Mart and a lunch break, Rich went back to work and I tackled office organization. I shredded two garbage bags’ worth of documents we no longer needed. I swear, it seems like our unofficial goal in life is to accumulate paper. At least we can recycle everything I shredded.

To unwind tonight, Rich joined me to watch the second episode of the new Fox series “Bones.” He agrees with me that the second episode is where this series really started hitting its stride. Whereas the pilot episode (as all pilots do) basically served to set up the premise and introduce characters, everything really started coming together in the second episode. The series focuses on Dr. Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel), a forensic anthropologist at the Jeffersonian Institution in D.C. She is recruited by FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) to assist him with murder investigations and special cases. Booth takes to calling the good doctor “Bones,” a nickname she hates. She is supported by her skilled lab team, whom Booth collectively pools together under the name “squints.” Deschanel is a strong leading lady, leaving no doubt as to whose show this is. Boreanaz, however, provides a good foil for our protagonist, and the two work very well together, generating chemistry on all levels. The supporting cast provides Bones with a solid core group of people on whom she can rely. Zack (Eric Millegan) is young and eager to please his mentor, sometimes coming across as competitive. Angela (Michaela Conlin) serves as Bones’ closest confidante, no mean feat considering the doctor’s lacking social skills and penchant for privacy. Jack (T.J. Thyne) is a conspiracy buff who resents the FBI constantly looking over the team’s shoulders. The second episode gives me hope that the show will hold on to the audience it has deservedly found and not be written off as merely another “CSI“-inspired forensic drama clone. While “Bones” does indeed owe a large debt to “CSI,” the show manages to be unique enough that it stands out, as well.

As a rabid Garbage fan, I choose to believe the band that they’re taking a break, not breaking up.
