What Are Your Guilty Pleasure Songs?

Song Lyric of the Day:

Down the basement / Lock the cellar door / And baby / Talk dirty to me

Poison / “Talk Dirty to Me”

10:49PM.
I caught a special on Fuse the other day about the worst songs ever made. It got me to thinking about so-called “guilty pleasure” songs. Not necessarily bad songs, but songs that we may not be so quick to admit liking, much less knowing all the lyrics. You know–the songs where you sing along and realize the lyrics make no sense, are completely silly, or are still just plain indecipherable (paging Dexy’s Midnight Runners). We all have them. Most of mine are from the 80’s. Here are some of my all-time favorites:

  • Talk Dirty to Me” by Poison -my future karaoke song
  • Baby Got Back” by Sir Mix-A-Lot – classic
  • I Want Your Sex” by George Michael -pretty tame by today’s standards
  • Superfreak” by Rick James – for that first wedding dance
  • Goody Two Shoes” by Adam Ant – my old theme song
  • Come On Eileen” by Dexy’s Midnight Runners – toora loora toora loo-rye-aye
  • Mickey” by Toni Basil – for those 3 1/2 minutes, I, too, am a cheerleader
  • Hangin’ Tough” by New Kids on the Block – Wanna make something of it?
  • Jump Around” by House of Pain – that Sega reference is so dated
  • Jive Talkin’” by The Bee Gees – it’s street, yo
  • Clubfoot” by Kasabian – what?
  • Smack My Bitch Up” by Prodigy – too short to be controversial

Oh my! This was a dangerous list to give to your friends.

I remember “Shake You Down,” too! I think One Life to Live or General Hospital used it a lot back in the day.

As for Chunky A, how could I possibly forget you? Oh, yeah, on purpose.
