I’ve been thinking about old high school friends a lot these days. It’s mostly a result of being back in town and the fact that my email is bombarded daily with messages from Classmates.com and Reunion.com (26 Farragut High School searches for you! Is one of them the guy who broke your heart? Find out who once you pay!).

I won’t lie: I hated high school. I was a completely different person then than who I am today. I was very, very introverted; painfully shy; and beyond insecure in my own skin. That said, I was never picked on by anyone or bullied; I was great at fading into the background. I had friends who were nerds like me and I had friends who were in the popular crowd.

I wonder why I lost touch with some of these friends; was it their fault or mine that we didn’t stay in touch? I guess it was mutual, fueled by the naivete of youth, the decision to let the friendships fade and die instead of hanging on to them, seeing where they would lead us later in life. Through the magic of Google, at least, I have been able to find out where some of them are today. I wonder if any of them ever Google my name.

Mabye now that Rich and I are back in Knoxville we’ll be able to attend our next high school reunion. We heard the last one was a huge flop, thanks to Gloria V.’s stupid decision to schedule it for the day after Thanksgiving. That’s the reason we missed it–that was the only time we hosted Thanksgiving in Virginia. We both would like to see and catch up with old friends. Maybe the next time around, we’ll be better at keeping in touch.

And, yes, my heart was broken by my high school “love.” Of course, he wasn’t bright enough to figure out that I loved him, which is why he broke my heart. Even his mother figured it out and was hoping we’d get together. We talked on the phone all the time, were concert buddies, and hung out a lot. At the time, I thought that that was what being in love was like. Now I know better. But I really do think I loved him as much as I possibly could, being an insecure, inexperienced teenager and all. I can at least say I asked him to our senior prom, so I had one great, magical night with him. I never knew a bowling alley at 4AM could be so romantic. What’s funny is that Rich, my future husband, was also there with his own prom date, whose wedding we attended last year. Fate has a pretty good sense of humor, don’t you think?

I wouldn’t go back in time if I could to relive my high school experience, though. It’s because of what I went through then that I am the way I am today. Falling in love with someone like Rich has also helped make me a much more confident person. There’s nothing like the support of your best friend/significant other/boyfriend/husband to boost your confidence on all fronts. And it doesn’t hurt that he likes to tell me he thinks I’m hot.

Jonathan and his father-in-law, Mr. Page, were just here trying to solve the mystery of our laundry room leak. They may have narrowed it down to the fact that the smurf throne in our master bathroom had virtually no wax ring left. Here’s hoping the laundry room floor starts to dry up now. Thanks again to them for taking time out of their busy lives to help Rich and I out.

In an amusing sidenote, Caleb is totally in awe of Mr. Page. He just loves him. He kept trying to walk over all the tools on the bathroom floor, which would normally terrify him, just to get close to Mr. Page. Anytime he heard his voice, his ears would perk up. He even cut Snoops off when she tried to get close to Mr. Page. Go figure.

10:33PM.
Woohoo! Rich and I got cleared to see Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire for free at a midnight show tonight. I’ll post a review tomorrow.

Hey Pattie ..I just caught your blog from the great beyond. It’s great to see that someone still appreciates my music. They play it a lot here in Hell, but it’s great to hear from a fan who isn’t Satan.
