Showing the Love for Love Monkey

So I didn’t get to finish what I’d written for yesterday’s post. But I will get to it eventually. In the meantime, though, I thought I’d go ahead and mention one of the shows I was writing up: Love Monkey. The show follows Tom Farrell (Tom Cavanagh), a music industry A&R rep, as he navigates his way through his unique, unpredictable, and generally unplanned personal and professional life in New York City. He is supported throughout thick and thin by his loyal friends, Mike (Jason Priestley), Shooter (Larenz Tate), Jake (Christopher Wiehl), and his best girl friend, Bran (Judy Greer). The show manages to be a genuine love letter to both the music industry and to New York City, that greatest of backdrops. See, Tom is not in the music biz for the money–he’s in it for the music. He wants others to hear in music what he hears–lyrics that move the soul, songs that make you want to change the world. Of course, Tom’s up-and-down professional life is tempered by his equally out-of-balance love life. Which is where his friends come in. More like a family, the gang is more than happy to point out Tom’s flaws (and occasionally his good qualities) when it comes to the choices he makes in his love life, like dating a singer whose music he hated. Only three episodes in, Tom has found a talented young singer, Wayne, whose music he is determined to share with the masses. And that’s really what our Love Monkey, Tom, is about: music. Each episode is beautifully scored by songs, both new and old, that not only enhance the episode but contribute to the story and character arcs. This is a show that has only been airing for a few weeks, but I’m already in love with it, as is Rich–the cast, the rapid-fire dialogue, the humor, the location, the music, basically, everything about it. And have I mentioned Tom Cavanagh? Honestly, it’s impossible to not love him. Resistance is futile. Which is why it pains me to have just now read that CBS has yanked it from the schedule. I can only hope CBS gives this show the chance to grow and find its audience, because I really believe that in time, it can. I know it certainly deserves to.

Sweet. My blog is mentioned in today’s edition of No Silence Here, a blog on our newspaper’s website. Getting a little recognition for my blog takes some of the sting out of not getting a job offer this week. I said some, not a lot.
