Tunes for a Tuesday

Song Lyric of the Day:

Hey, I put some new shoes on / And suddenly everything is right / I said, hey, I put some new shoes on and everybody’s smiling / It’s so inviting / Oh, short on money, but long on time / Slowly strolling in the sweet sunshine

Paolo Nutini / “New Shoes”

12:15PM.
I’ve been getting a lot more into music lately, which is not a bad thing since I’m typically all about anything TV- or movie-related. Recently a reader named Lizzie emailed me to ask for some music recommendations. Here are some of the suggestions I gave her along with some new ones. Keep in mind that some of these artists have been around for a while; therefore they may just be new to me.

Regina Spektor — think Fiona Apple piano prodigy, minus the angst and plus quirkiness and a sense of humor; I first saw her on VH1 and then the same song, “Fidelity,” was used on an episode of Grey’s Anatomy. (I really want those shoes she has on in the video.)
Mat Kearney — introspective folksy singer/rapper; I also saw his video for “Nothing Left to Lose” on VH1 and fell in love (with his songwriting and singing, of course).
Imogen Heap — quirky, very original British songstress introduced to me by the spouse; check out the songs “Headlock” & “Hide & Seek,” used to great dramatic effect in the pilot episode of the short-lived Smith (don’t get me started on that again).
The Tender Box — band with an 80s-esque sound; check out their song “Mister Sister” — it’s too fun to resist (the song was the best free download iTunes has had in a while).
Unkle Bob — my latest Grey’s Anatomy-related discovery. Their song, “Swans,” is just amazing. Check out some of their other songs on their MySpace page. My thanks again to Stuart and Rick from the band for patiently corresponding with me.
Kate Havnevik — yes, another Grey’s Anatomy discovery (the show is awesome for new music, as is Scrubs); just a really great songwriter who says what it’s hard to say.

Rilo Kiley — great group that I’ve seen twice (once for free, once as the opening act for Coldplay) — think Garbage light: unique sound, more optimistic lyrics; the lead singer, Jenny Lewis, also has a side group called Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins that has a nice, almost country-esque sound.

I’ll post again later today about some other bands and artists I’ve got my eye on.

Who are you listening to these days?

10:52PM.
Bah. I’m tired after spending the evening cleaning the house (company’s coming tomorrow), but I’ll leave you with a happy video for the night, Paolo Nutini’s “New Shoes” (the UK version).
