Mother’s Day 2007

Song Lyric of the Day:

Mama said there’ll be days like this / There’ll be days like this my Mama said / My eyes are wide open

The Shirelles
/ “Mama Said”

Another busy weekend is at an end. Today Rich and I spent time with my family, celebrating both Mother’s Day and my parents’ 35th wedding anniversary. Nothing like fighting like PMSing alley cats with your younger sisters to amuse the parents. After dinner with my family, we then met up with Rich’s parents to celebrate Mother’s Day. Caleb is now enjoying chewing up the water bottle his Grandma Carol sent him.

As we’ve gotten older, we’ve seen some of our friends through the loss of their mother. And as I get older, I’m keenly aware that someday I’ll be the one turning to those friends for comfort and understanding. So while I’m grateful that I was able to spend a happy day with my wonderful mom and equally wonderful mother-in-law, my thoughts today were also with my friends who didn’t have moms to hug, moms to scold them for picking on their siblings, moms to cook for, moms to give them unsolicited advice, moms to buy presents for. And it’s because of them that I doubly cherish every moment I have with my mom and mother-in-law.

Introspection aside, a sincere happy Mother’s Day to those of you with little ones. Because no matter how old we get, we’ll always be our moms’ babies.

***

My little ones are of the four-legged variety, but for all intents and purposes those two dogs and four cats are most definitely my babies. Sure, they make messes and have damaged things with which they had no business, but they’ve also sat with me when I’ve cried, comforted me when I’ve needed it, and made me laugh so hard that my sides hurt. And while they can’t talk, they show they love me in return when they come to me to be comforted during scary storms, fight over who gets to sit in my lap, purr merely in response to the sound of my voice or the touch of my hand, and lobby to be as close to me as often as they possibly can. They’re sometimes brats, but they’re my brats through and through.
