Coraline’s Playlist

I admit it: This playlist is more to help me through labor than it is for Coraline to bop her head and tap her foot to, although she very well might someday. You know, like when she has control over her head movements and isn’t swaddled up like a half-Iowan/half-Puerto Rican, Knoxville-born burrito.

I picked some songs from my iTunes library based on how the lyrics and music make me feel with regard to impending motherhood. As expected most of the songs are about romantic love, but some of the lyrics — for me, anyway — very easily translate to how I’m feeling about this little girl Rich and I are scheduled to meet tomorrow.

Here are some of the songs I’ve loaded on my iPod, and the specific lyrics that led me to choose them.

Hayling” — FC Kahuna
Don’t think about all those things you fear / Just be glad to be here (complete lyrics here)

Colorful” — Rocco Deluca and the Burden
You’re the most colorful thing that I’ve seen / You’re the most beautiful thing that I’ve seen / You’re the most colorful thing that I’ve seen (complete lyrics here)

Suddenly I See” — KT Tunstall
Her face is a map of the world / Is a map of the world / You can see she’s a beautiful girl / She’s a beautiful girl / And everything around her is a silver pool of light … Suddenly I see (Suddenly I see) / This is what I wanna be (complete lyrics here)

Kingdom Come” — Coldplay
For you I’d wait ’til kingdom come / Until my day, my day is done (complete lyrics here)

Feeling Good” — Michael Buble
It’s a new dawn / It’s a new day / It’s a new life / For me / And I’m feeling good (complete lyrics here)

Falling Slowly” — Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova
Falling slowly, eyes that know me / And I can’t go back / The moods that take me and erase me / And I’m painted black (complete lyrics here)

Read My Mind” — The Killers
‘Cause I don’t shine if you don’t shine / Put your back on me / Put your back on me / Put your back on me / The stars are blazing like rebel diamonds cut out of the sun / When you read my mind (complete lyrics here)

Say Hey (I Love You)” — Michael Franti and Spearhead
Seems like everywhere I go / The more I see, the less I know / But I know one thing / That I love you, baby girl / I love you, I love you, I love you (complete lyrics here)
