In Need of Tunes for a Tuesday

Song Lyric of the Day:

I don’t know what this is / But you got me good / Just like you knew you would / I don’t know what you do / But you do it well / I’m under your spell

I want new music and I have iTunes gift cards burning a hole in my virtual pocket. My problem is that I don’t know what I should buy. Anyone got any recommendations?

To give you an idea of what I’m into these days, my current favorite album is Writer’s Block by Peter Bjorn and John (oh, how I love “Amsterdam”). My wish list of artists I want to play in Knoxville includes Franz Ferdinand, Flogging Molly, The VLA, Snow Patrol, Paul Oakenfold, The Von Bondies, and The Fratellis — and those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Of course, this being Knoxville, it’ll be a miracle if any of those groups ever makes a pit stop here. (Note to Flogging Molly: We have Irish pubs here! I swear we do!) Since not everyone who lives here likes country music (ahem).

I’ve also been listening to Moby‘s 18 and The KillersSam’s Town albums a lot lately. Not as eclectic as my tastes usually run, although I’m also listening to disco and ’80s music (best. music. ever.) as part of my workout playlist (I highly recommend MP3-compatible treadmills).

In the spirit of new music, I’ll leave you with Duffy‘s video for today’s Song Lyric of the Day, “Mercy.” Be sure to check out her site — she’s got other equally kickass songs available for listening.

Ctrl-Alt-Del
I know our trip to Uruguay is just around the corner, but, God, it cannot get here soon enough. I need a break. From everything.

I’ll Finish … Someday
I am the queen of the unpublished post. It’s a direct result of working on a computer all day, day in and day out. By the time I get home most nights, I don’t even want to look at a computer, much less log on. So I’ll start a post, get tired, and leave it saved and unpublished. And I don’t even remember the last time I uploaded pics to my Flickr account. Because lord knows, I have a lot of new ones to add.

Walking & Getting Nowhere
Rich and I bought a treadmill last Friday after work. And it’s the most fun piece of exercise equipment we’ve ever owned (built-in fans, stereo to plug the iPod into). Whereas I was ready for a heart attack after 10 minutes on the stationery bike, I can power-walk on this baby for a half hour and barely break a sweat (and burn 130+ calories per session). Of course, the treadmill scares the bejesus out of Caleb. He smiles and then barks his head off as he slowly backs away and runs back upstairs. Snoops could give a rat’s ass, as is her naturally cool disposition. The treadmill is in the Florida room, which is nearing completion thanks to Rich and the invaluable help of his dad, Doug (and a nice assist from Ken the other day). We’re aiming to blow the room out and get everything finished as soon as we get back from our vacation.

Raise What’s Left of the Flag for Me
I’m listening to the Flogging Molly album Whiskey on a Sunday as I blog this. And wishing I were in an Irish pub enjoying a sing-along. Must go back to Irish Times soon… Man, how awesome would that be if Flogging Molly played Knoxville? Hey, I can dream.

Left to His Own Devices
Caleb started his own blog the other day, The Amazing True Tales of Caleb, the Pitiful Bull. And he’s already kicking my ass with updates. Go figure.

Happy New Year!

Song Lyric of the Day:

If I ever leave this world alive / I’ll thank ya for the things you did in my life / If I ever leave this world alive / I’ll come back down and sit beside your feet tonight / Where ever I am you’ll always be / More than just a memory / If I ever leave this world alive

Happy New Year!

Hard to believe it’s now 2008. God, I’m old. After a great last night of 2007 with Caren, her boyfriend, and Rich, I had a great first day of 2008. I saw P.S. I Love You with my sisters (and cried through the whole thing – go see it!), told Rich how much I love him (on account of feeling incredibly sentimental today; see: P.S. I Love You), got a hug from my mommy, and was productive around the house. Oh, and I once again hit Steve & Barry’s – they still have the everything-in-the-store-is-$8.98 sale going on. Today $58 bought me a pair of jeans, a pair of khakis, a pair of track pants (for house lounging), a long-sleeve Henley shirt (also for house lounging), a beautiful crocheted scarf, and a black quilted light jacket. Not too shabby.

Anyhoo, in the spirit of making new year resolutions that will hopefully not be broken too soon (if at all), here goes. This year, I will do my best to:

  • Get back in shape
  • Swear a lot less, if at all (this is a perennial on account of my potty mouth being an inherited trait)
  • Write at least a paragraph of my book every day (that way I can feel that much more accomplished when I churn out a page or more), which will help me to
  • Finish another chapter of my book so Rich can pony up that Pottery Barn desk he promised me
  • Spend more time with my family
  • Be more tolerant, patient, and forgiving (also a perennial)
  • Create and stick to a budget
  • Journal every day
  • Cut way down on fast food, including not value/up/biggie sizing it
  • Get a lot more organized when it comes to house paperwork (so many things to file…)
  • Take at least one photo a day
  • Save up and buy that digital SLR I dream of, which will help me to
  • Take a photography course
  • Set up an Etsy shop for my photos
  • Read a lot more books
  • Whittle down the towers of magazine piles I have all over the house
  • Finish home improvement projects we’ve had in limbo forever
  • Clean Mo (my Xterra) so he once again gleams like the top of the Chrysler Building
  • Work up the nerve and make the time to be a Big Sister
  • Try at least one new recipe a month
  • Attend at least one film festival (I’m eyeing Tribeca or Toronto)
  • Buy a mountain bike so I can enjoy rides with the hubby
  • Punch up my wardrobe (now approximately 25% from Steve & Barry’s)
  • Wear skirts and dresses outside of special/formal occasions
  • Be a better person all around
  • Bonus resolution: finish the year-end blog posts I started and abandoned the last few days on account of enjoying my vacation so much

Best of luck with your own resolutions, and here’s to a great 2008!
