A Christmas Meme

Christmas Song Lyric of the Day:

But the last time I played Father Christmas / I stood outside a department store / A gang of kids came over and mugged me / And knocked my reindeer to the floor

The Kinks / “Father Christmas

11:53AM.
In once again trying to get back to normal, I decided to take a stab at this Christmas Meme I found over at Knoxville Trivia Blog (always a fun, interesting read). Before I get to my answers, I’d like to tag Caren, Rich, and Kim to tackle this one themselves since I know their answers would be fun and creative. Now, here goes.

  1. Wrapping or gift bags? Hello: Charter member of Flickr’s Gift Wrap Fetish pool.
  2. Real or artificial tree? Artificial, which delights the cats as much as a real tree would.
  3. When do you put up the tree? Soon after Thanksgiving.
  4. When do you take the tree down? If we’re not busy wallowing in our laziness and post-Christmas haze, soon after New Year’s Day.
  5. Do you like eggnog? I flee in terror from anything with the word “nog” in it.
  6. Favorite gift received as a child? Isabel Sissy, the red-haired Cabbage Patch Doll I got from my Abuela Tulita.
  7. Do you have a nativity scene? Sadly, no. (Sacreligious for a raised Catholic, I know.)
  8. Worst Christmas gift you ever received? My husband’s very sincere, very sweet attempt at a stocking stuffer: two rolls of nickels
  9. Mail or email Christmas cards? Mail, although we’re really pushing it this year.
  10. Favorite Christmas Movie? Duh: A Christmas Story! Reminds me — I need to get out our leg lamp nightlight!
  11. When do you start shopping for Christmas? As soon as I think I found a perfect gift for someone; this year that was back in September.
  12. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? The traditional pernil my parents make
  13. Clear lights or colored on the tree? Colored!
  14. Favorite Christmas song? For shits and giggles, I’ll say “The Night Santa Went Crazy” by Weird Al Yankovic
  15. Travel at Christmas or stay home? Thankfully, we are home now.
  16. Can you name all of Santa’s reindeer? Yes, but I don’t think they’d like the names I’d give them. Chauncey, anyone?
  17. Angel on the tree top or a star? Star
  18. Open the presents Christmas Eve or Christmas morning? The majority on Christmas morning, capping off the never-ending battle with the spouse about opening them all the night before
  19. Most annoying thing about this time of year? Locally: traffic around West Town Mall and Turkey Creek; Nationally: Ridiculous arguments over political correctness (holidays, festivus, etc.). Enough already; Internationally: Australian Santas have to say “ha ha ha” now so they don’t scare kids or offend women. That’s just wrong.
  20. Do you decorate your tree in any specific theme or color? Multi-colored, heavy on the purple and Star Wars ornaments.
  21. What do you leave for Santa? Directions on how to get back out of South Knoxville.
  22. Least favorite holiday song? Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmas Time.” I love RetroCrush’s description of it as a “yuletide abortion.”
  23. Favorite ornament? My light-up Lion King one.
  24. Family tradition? Tie between our traditional meals and my family’s knack for opening presents Christmas morning so quickly that we could qualify for a Guinness world record.
  25. Ever been to Midnight Mass? Possibly. I may have been dreaming.
  26. Most memorable good deed you witnessed or participated in during the holidays? When my mom stole (rescued) our neighbor’s puppy, Princess, because they abused her (no food, hitting her with a hammer). That was the night Mom became even more of a hero to me and my sisters, and a hero to Princess for the rest of her abuse-free, spoiled life.

Desperately Seeking the Christmas Spirit

Christmas Song Lyric of the Day:

Snowflakes were fallin’ / As she spotted her date for Christmas Eve / She had to move quickly / ‘Cause snow was melting all up in her brand-new weave

The Dan Band / “Ho Ho Ho”*

3:00PM.
Rich and I are both working on starting our respective halves of our Christmas letter for this year. Since we didn’t write one or send any cards out last year, we figure we should make an effort this year. At this rate, though, our success rate will slow to the point where we’re only sending Christmas letters/cards out every other Leap Year. But I digress.

I’m having trouble starting my half of the letter, since, for the 14 (see what I did? I added a person) of you who read this blog on a regular basis know, this year was a really, really bad one. A lot of good things happened this year, too, but deaths, illnesses, and divorces have, unfortunately, outweighed the good for me. Hell, I spent the latter half of January and most of September and October crying, things were so bad. And while I am genuinely looking forward to Christmas, it’s been some work getting excited about it. But I think I’m getting there. Having a funny dog who is essentially acting like a snooping child helps, as does watching my two tabbies have a smack fight under the tree, and watching How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (the good one, not the bastardized version) with Rich. And I’m enjoying all the wrapping paper, presents, and Christmas decorations around the house, although I really have to ramp up my gift-wrapping efforts this year, especially since I joined the Gift Wrap Fetish pool on Flickr that Caren founded. Finally, some kindred spirits.

So what’s helping me get into the holiday spirit? The fact that I’m a greedy, greedy person and I want presents. Kidding! Well, partly, anyway. Really, though, I’m looking forward to spending Christmas with my family and friends, watching my kids (all six of them) tear into and enjoy their loot, and treating my hubby to some pretty kick-ass presents. Mostly, though, I’m just happy that we all made it through this year.

*I’m kicking off my 12 days of Christmas Song Lyrics of the Day today.
