The Haps in a Nutshell

Song Lyric of the Day:

Give me just a minute / Of your time tonight

It was a long, busy holiday weekend:

Friday: We Done Went to the Dogs
Our friend, Caren, brought her four-month-old Papillon puppy, Willow, to our house to play with Snoops and Caleb while we finished watching O Brother, Where Art Thou?. Caleb had met Willow at Bark in the Park, but this was Snoops’ first time meeting her. She barked her head off at Willow when Caren first got here, but as soon as we took Snoops to meet (read: sniff) her, she decided that, since Willow’s a puppy, she would love her unconditionally. We came back into the house, let Caleb see that Willow was here, and sat back and enjoyed watching the dogs play for a while. Basically, wherever Willow went, Caleb and Snoops were sure to follow. Caleb managed to impress us with his ability to literally skid to a halt whenever Willow would stop suddenly.
*Note: Flickr‘s down at the moment, so I can’t upload the photos I took, but I’ll try to get to them tomorrow night; I also have some video I shot of them playing that I’ll post to YouTube when I post the photos.

Saturday: Friends, Supremacists, Art & Quality Couch Time
Saturday was that rarity: a day without an agenda. So Rich and I took advantage of it. We took care of some recycling and headed downtown to meet Brent for lunch at Market Square. As I was driving down Gay Street, I pointed out to Rich that several roads were blocked off. And that there were a lot of policemen out. In riot gear. Curious (to put it mildly), we pulled over when we saw a cop standing on a nearby corner — sans riot gear — to ask what was going on. I asked if there was a parade (Memorial Day was two days a
way, after all). The cop shook his head, sighed heavily, and said, “Nope. White supremacist rally.” Stunned, Rich and I drove on to meet Brent for lunch. Once at Market Square, we discovered that we’d been missing out on Saturday Farmer’s Markets (10AM-2PM); we’ll make it a point to get to one soon. We found Brent in the crowd and headed to Trio for lunch. After lunch, the three of us enjoyed a very hot walk around downtown Knoxville. We split off and Rich and I headed to the Knoxville Museum of Art to take advantage of our membership. We enjoyed some of the current exhibits and were happy to learn that a Rembrandt exhibit will begin in June. Tired, we finally headed home where we vegged the rest of the night.

We later found out that only 30 supremacists showed up for the rally. Twice as many people showed up to protest them. So in honor of the hatemongers, check out The Latino Coalition, the NAACP, GLAAD, and the Asian American Association.

Sunday: Housework, Trio Redux & Hot Fuzz
Sunday was a blur of housework the majority of the day, since I was working to get the house ready for our Monday cookout. By the time Sunday evening rolled around, I’d made plans to have dinner with Tamara (Trio again) and see Hot Fuzz — for a third time. Yes, it’s that funny. Also, Tamara needed a funny movie, and it more than fit the bill. “Yarp.”

Monday: Cooking Out, Heatstroke & Family
In a nutshell: cranky Pattie on account of the heat and early guests; overheated, overly hyper dogs; 14 friends and family members to feed; LOTS of food; good time had by all; B-I-N-G-O; people straggling home; Settlers of Catan with Rich, Tamara, and Brent (I lost — big surprise there); and The Full Monty with Tamara.

Today: Mush Brain & Deadlines, Together Again at Long Last
Going back to work today was tough; I was exhausted and my brain was mush after the long weekend. I did have a fun lunch with my two cube neighbors and another coworker who, we recently discovered, has his own IMDB page and has written and directed movies; he’s also worked with Michael Mann and Quentin Tarantino, so of course my buddies and I — movie buffs all — wanted to talk his ear off. We’re hoping to make it a semi-regular thing. And, no, I’m not going to say who the Hollywood insider is — that’s not my place.

I’m off to bed now. Since I didn’t have any pictures to use for visual aid, here’s a nice Jensen Ackles photo to guarantee a good night’s sleep for the ladies. And some of the men. Not that there’s anything wrong with that (see above GLAAD link).

Is it just me, or does the facial hair somehow manage to make him look a bit younger? How is that even possible?
