Family Jewels
I have to give another hearty thanks to my mom and my sister, Vanessa, for taking care of the kids while we were gone this weekend. Caleb charmed them, as usual, while Yum Yum made himself scarce to the point of only being heard and not seen. Belle skulked around, Finn and Buster were their typical lap kitty selves, while Snoops was Miss Independent. It means a lot to us to know the kids are always in good hands with their grandmama and their auntie.

That Wascally Wabbit
The drive from Knoxville to Hampton Roads took nearly 10 hours on Friday, due in part to an awful traffic jam outside of Richmond (there’d been a bad accident). Despite that, Rich and I were blessed with good weather, books, and music for most of the drive. Rich being Rich, he has a rather unique way of singing along with songs. At one point, his singing brought to mind that weird Skittles commercial with the singing rabbit. Remember to watch what you wish for.

Not Enough Time
We had a lot of fun in Virginia this past weekend. While we got to see some of our friends, we didn’t get to see everyone we had hoped to see. Since our trip was finalized at the very last minute (despite talking about it for a few weeks), we weren’t able to meet up with some friends who were already planning on being out of town themselves, had sick kids, or just couldn’t meet up with us when we had time available. Also, it’s really hard to cram visits in with people when you’re in town for only two full days and a late evening. Still, we really enjoyed visiting with Matt and Kristen; Richard and Donna; Noah, Tiffany, and the boys; and Sharon and Russ. I also really enjoyed our visit to DSW Shoe Warehouse in Virginia Beach; I was definitely going to squeeze that in no matter what. Next time, I hope we can fly in for closer to five days. I say fly because after 10 hours to get there and 11 to get back, we’re officially over that drive.

The Black Kitty Gestapo Strikes Back
Those of you who know Yum Yum’s back story know that since I found him at the tender age of six weeks old, he’s been incredibly attached to me. He doesn’t just think I’m his mommy, he KNOWS I’m his mommy. As such, since I was away from him for what apparently were three lonnnnng nights, he wasn’t going to let me enjoy my first night home in my own bed. No sooner had Rich and I turned out the lights than we heard Yum Yum’s faint meows at our bedroom door. Soft meows and light pawing on the door soon gave way to flat-out caterwauling and thumping on the door. What did he want? Mommy. So I dragged my pillow over to the guest room, where Yum Yum immediately quieted down and settled down to sleep with me. Well, sleep in the sense that if I so much as shifted position, he started purring and flexing all over again. That pudgy 12-pound body puts out heat like a damn furnace; thank God for the ceiling fan. And, yes, this is something Yum Yum routinely does when I’ve been gone for a significant amount of time (in his eyes).

Sleepworking
I managed to get all my work done today, including addressing the 65 emails I got while away; all my deadlines were met. It wasn’t easy, being as tired as I was after a night of Yum Yum’s purring and flexing, but I managed. At least having a lot of work to do made the day go by faster.

Down to the Wire
After work, Rich drove me to my last American Cancer Society Relay for Life team captains’ meeting (we carpooled today). Help me meet my fundraising goal and make a donation to help me fight cancer. Feel free to donate to any of my teammates: Rich, Marjie, Caren, Vanessa, Ken, Dad, or Tamara. We appreciate your support.

And now I have to go. Yum Yum is nearby, wanting some more quality time with me. Here’s hoping he lets me sleep in my own room tonight.
