Spreading the Gospel According to Blogging

Song Lyric of the Day:

Welcome to a new kind of tension. / All across the alienation. / Everything isn’t meant to be okay. / Television dreams of tomorrow. / We’re not the ones who’re meant to follow.

Green Day / “American Idiot”

I’ve created another blogger—one of my cubemates, Lee. He’s quite the character, as are our other cubemates, Sam and Bob. Lee is a retired Navy senior chief who is probably the most politically aware person I’ve ever known. By that, I mean that he makes it a point not only to keep up on current events but to understand them. He actually watches C-SPAN! I usually go to him when I’ve got a question about something I heard on the news. It’s easier and much more entertaining than trying to research the issue on my own. He also provides invaluable entertainment by regaling us with stories about his wife, son, stepdaughter, and dog.

Sam is also retired Navy, having put in 20 years on a sub. Sam is a computer nerd to rival the best of them, Rich included (hi, honey!). Outside of work, he is Chief Technical Officer for EastCoastLan, one of the region’s biggest computer gaming organizations. He also provides invaluable entertainment with stories about some of the gamers he deals with, via his website and at actual gaming events. He also has some very interesting (and sometimes gross) stories about the various foods he tried during his travels with the Navy. I don’t care how good he says whale meat is, I will never, ever give that a try.

Between both Lee’s and Sam’s stories about their adventures in the Navy, I’ve gotten some real insight into the male psyche. Real scary insight.

Then there’s Bob. What can I say about Bob? Being the oldest in the cube, he’s kind of unofficially the cube leader, if you will. He lives on a 5-acre farm with his wife and Bichon Frise. Lately he’s been keeping us up to date on his church’s scandal, which involves the most dishonest, lazy pastor I’ve ever heard of. We like to call the saga “As the Pulpit Turns.” I never knew behind-the-scenes dealings at a church could be so fascinating.

So while I may complain about how boring my job is, I at least sit with three really great guys. I have made some great friendships while working for my company, these guys included. And it’s a lot of fun being the only woman in our cube; I assimilated very quickly into the fold. Although I have to say, I have heard more dirty jokes in my months here than I had heard in my entire life until then.

Even though I’ll be out of town the next five days, I’ll make it a point to check Lee’s blog for updates. After all, I am his blogging mentor.

Tonight Rich and I will be packing for our trip. Somehow our youngest cat, Yum Yum, managed to time a bladder infection so he has to go with us to continue receiving his medications. So he joins me, Rich, Snoops, and Caleb for the holidays. I seriously doubt my other 3 cats will miss him much, as he’s something of a troublemaker.

After packing, I will program the VCRs in the living room and the bedroom. Just because it’s Thanksgiving weekend doesn’t mean I can’t keep up with my TV shows, and I don’t want to miss tomorrow night’s new episodes of “CSI” and “Without a Trace.” And I’ll be taping Sunday’s “Desperate Housewives,” because I’m not sure how late we’ll be getting home from Knoxville. The only thing I know for sure is that we will be very, very tired.

I’ll do my best to post a couple of times over the long weekend. Here’s to a safe trip, and a great weekend with family and friends I don’t get to see nearly enough. And to Big Ed’s Pizza in Oak Ridge, TN. Mmm…Big Ed’s Pizza.

Hope you guys enjoyed your Thanksgiving break! It sounds as if you’ve found new blogging blood! I think that’s great. I plan on adding a few more blog sites to my links page. Some of these people are local, some are not.

I really like that “american idiot” song. I think Green Day is awesome. Christian and I saw them in concert about 2 years ago and they were amazing and incredibly fun to watch.

    P.S. Can I have an autograph ;-)?
