Happy Valentine’s Day!

Song Lyric of the Day:

It’s not always rainbows and butterflies / It’s compromise that moves us along / My heart is full and my door’s always open / You can come anytime you want

I really need to make an attempt at updating over the weekend. Bad Pattie.

Yesterday my wonderful hubby took me out for my Valentine’s surprise. As it turned out, the surprise was on both of us. But we still had a fun day together. All I knew was that we would be going out of town for the day, but not overnight. We had a nice drive with me having no clue as to where we would end up. Was he taking me horseback riding? (I’d be sore the rest of the week). Were we going skydiving? (I don’t have a will made out yet). Had he found out that The Killers were playing nearby? (That would be AWESOME).

Having convinced me we were ahead of schedule for the surprise, we pulled off of I-64 at Short Pump in search of a Starbucks and a clean restroom. My suggestion to try the Target Greatland for a Starbucks was off the mark; they had a Pizza Hut and Taco Bell instead. I remembered that Barnes & Noble has a Short Pump location (including a Starbucks-serving cafe), so we went in search of it and found it a couple of blocks down. We then popped over to Jared Galleria of Jewelry to see if we could get our wedding bands brushed and polished. Due to the Valentine’s Day crush, they couldn’t fit us in.

After all these stops, my curiosity was at its peak. I started getting a bit tweaky, questioning where exactly we were going and what time the surprise was supposed to happen. Rich insisted we were still ahead of schedule, so we drove a couple more blocks to a really nice, upscale shopping mall, the Short Pump Town Center. We started out in Nordstrom and headed into what turned out to be an open-air mall. After browsing for a while in all the fancy stores way, way out of my price range, we stumbled upon the Apple store.

To say the Apple store is like a toy store for us would be an understatement. I drooled over the iMac G5 I hope to be able to buy around June/July and played with all the laptops, iPods, and whatnot. Rich had wandered off to talk to a store clerk while I played with all the gadgets. After a few minutes he came back, noticeably agitated. He said my surprise was ruined. I was confused as I thought we were still on our way to it after the mall. Turns out he was going to buy me my very own iPod Shuffle, which holds 10 CDs, for my Valentine’s Day gift. He was also going to buy himself one. Even though Rich had called the store on Friday to verify that they were well-stocked, they sold out on Saturday. While he could have bought one locally, he thought it would be fun to visit the Apple store and see all the products in person, particularly the G5; he was right on that count. After convincing him my surprise was not ruined, just delayed, we decided to spend the rest of the afternoon looking around the mall. We had a very filling lunch at an Italian restaurant, Maggiano’s Little Italy, and looked in several more stores. Rich even found a couple of good bargains. And now I know that Dillard’s Clinique bonus time runs through February 26.

So even though I didn’t get my Valentine’s Day gift as planned, I think Rich and I still managed to have a really fun day away from home. My boy did good.
