First, how great was the Lost finale last night? Viewers who abandoned ship earlier in the season really missed out — my mom included. I’ll have to rub that in later when I talk to her.
Playing catchup this past week and watching lots (and lots) of season finales has gotten me thinking about some of my all-time favorite title sequences. Specifically, watching two seasons’ worth of Bones in under a month; I think the show’s title sequence is one of the best examples of opening credits perfectly fitting the tone of a series. Nowadays, with more networks dictating that TV showrunners forego title sequences and sometimes even theme music to save time and money (Lost, Heroes, Supernatural), a great title sequence stands out that much more. The theme music, graphics, the pace, the editing — all of it has to mesh just the right way. What are some of your favorites? Here are some of mine.
Bones – All around coolness, including theme music by The Crystal Method.
Cold Case – Dark and emotional.
The Office – A tribute to the mundane.
Weeds – The illusion of a normal suburban existence.
Dexter – The ordinary, everyday routine of an unusual serial killer.
Battlestar Galactica – Intergalactic drama.
And, even though these shows are no longer on the air, their title sequences also still really stand out. (Thanks again, USA Network, for not giving Touching Evil a chance.)
Touching Evil – Perfect all around.
Six Feet Under – A flawless fit for the tone of the series.
