Oh now feel it comin’ back again / Like a rollin’ thunder chasing the wind / Forces pullin’ from the center of the earth again / I can feel it

Last night I finally got around to watching this past Sunday’s episode of “Desperate Housewives.” I gotta say, I’m not liking the second season so far. The characters are getting dumber and more pathetic, not to mention going overboard, which is saying something considering the show is a dark satire. Honestly–Lynette releasing a rat in her house to get Tom to clean? Edie rollerskating around the neighborhood dressed like a 12-year-old, complete with pigtails and pom poms? Betty and her son’s mystery man in the basement? Gabrielle flaunting her affair in her jailed husband’s face? And Susan is more pathetic and annoying than ever, which is really saying something. The only character who, thus far, has not gone off the deep end is Bree. Changing her dead husband’s tacky tie at his funeral was perfectly keeping in character with the Bree we know and love. As for the others, well, they’d better shape up soon. I don’t know what the writers are doing to this show; it’s completely off track so far this year. I tolerated the uneven writing last year because at its core, the show’s heart was still the friendships between the ladies. This year, other than Rex’s funeral, they haven’t been in a significant scene together. I’m going to give it a couple more episodes before I call it a day.

The highlight of last night’s TV viewing was definitely “Fire,” the new episode of “The Office.” I love when a comedy actually makes you laugh out loud (as “Arrested Development” always does), and “The Office” didn’t disappoint. From Dwight listening to R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts” alone in his car to the ladies’ selection of “Legally Blonde” as a desert island-worthy DVD to Michael’s “Mambo No. 5” ringtone, this episode was brilliant. Definitely required viewing every Tuesday night.

Today I met Jonathan and Curry at The Chop House for lunch. We discussed the aforementioned TV shows and just caught up in general. Jonathan promised to come by our house this weekend and figure out the DVR-Tivo hookup for me. Rich and I have a ton of programs saved on Tivo that we want to burn to DVD, but the two machines don’t seem to want to read each other. The latest configuration I have going has the DVR playing the Tivo audio, but I can’t get it to show the video. Here’s hoping Jonnie can figure it out for us.

Tomorrow morning I have to take Yum Yum to the vet for a recheck of his leg. Should be fun getting him into his carrier. I have to say, though, the poor little guy is quite the trooper. He’s even hobbled upstairs a couple of times and then napped on the dining room chairs. I guess it got lonely for him downstairs.

I’m working on whittling down our CD collection. To that end, I have selected the following CDs for trade-in at McKay’s:

  • Empire Records – soundtrack
  • So I Married an Axe Murderer – soundtrack
  • The Spirit Room – Michelle Branch
  • The Best of Blondie – Blondie
  • The Comfort Zone – Vanessa Williams (how I overlooked this one before is beyond me)
  • The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill – Lauryn Hill
  • Candyass – Orgy

The singles “Jump Around” by House of Pain; “Cold” and “Blue” by LaTour; and “Candle in the Wind 1997” by Elton John (need I say more?) are also goners. All these discs have had a good run, but they aren’t ones for the ages. I did import them into iTunes for posterity’s sake, with the exceptions of Vanessa Williams and Sir Elton. As much as I love the movie “So I Married an Axe Murderer,” the soundtrack leaves something to be desired. At least I can listen to “This Poem Sucks” in iTunes whenever the mood strikes. Now it’s Rich’s turn to select CDs for the trade-in sacrifice. Good luck to him.
