Bridal Shower and Baby Zoomers

Song Lyric of the Day:

Anything you want, you got it / Anything you need, you got it / Anything at all, you got it

Roy Orbison / “You Got It”

10:06AM.
Vanessa’s bridal shower yesterday was a blast. The house was full with nine women, beautiful decorations, and tons of presents. I’m still tired from it; being social gets more and more exhausting as I get older. I’ll write more about the shower later today when I have time; I’ll try to post some pics, as well.

In quickly checking the news before I head out to run errands (including dropping my job offer acceptance letter off at the post office), I am reminded why I don’t ever get food from Domino’s Pizza. Who is Tom Monaghan to play God like that? Judging by other recent news stories, I doubt he’ll have a problem finding willing pharmacists. And, yes, I was raised Catholic. But I most definitely do not agree with restricting peoples’ access to birth control.

9:31PM.
I still haven’t downloaded the bridal shower pics off the camera, but I thought I’d go ahead and recap it. Tamara, Vanessa’s maid of honor, arrived at our house around 10:30AM yesterday to help set up. I had stayed up late the night before cleaning and doing food prep. Once Tamara arrived, we hauled ass to get the house shower-ready (Rich made himself scarce and went to have lunch with Brent and Jonnie). Between the two of us, we finished getting the food ready, set up the buffet-style counter, and decorated the house. Vanessa and Mom arrived a bit before the 1PM start time, so we made them wait downstairs in my very cold bedroom (heat rises, which really stinks when your bedroom is on the first floor of a three-story house). We sprung Mom early, and we were soon joined by Curry, at which point we let Vanessa come upstairs. Beverly and Melissa arrived soon after, as did Samantha. We dug into the food almost immediately. The spinach dip, presented in a hollowed-out bread bowl (wonderfully carved out by Tamara), went very quickly. A tray of Chick-Fil-A chicken nuggets, islander cheese ball, spicy deviled eggs, and chicken fajitas rounded out the offerings. I’d prepared the dip, cheese ball, fajita chicken, and most of the deviled egg mixture Saturday night, so all I had to do yesterday was cook the eggs and add the yolk mixture. Once we’d gorged ourselves on all that food, we followed it up with a delicious, beautifully decorated cake.

Next up were games. We played stick the bowtie on the bachelor, which Samantha handily won, raising our suspicions. We then split into two teams to begin designing toilet paper bridal gowns using Vanessa and Samantha as our models. Debbie arrived just in time to serve as our impartial judge, awarding the win to the Versace-esque/sumo-style/skirted creation Tamara, Curry, and I designed for Samantha. Curry even made nifty rosettas out of the toilet paper, adding a nice accent. Our tiara-adorned bride-to-be was then seated in her balloon-decorated chair of honor to begin opening her many gifts, which Tamara and I had arranged around the fireplace. (See, I really need those pics!). Unbeknownst to Vanessa, Curry was not only documenting who gave Vanessa what, but also the first thing Vanessa said upon opening each present. The resulting list represented things Vanessa would say on her honeymoon night. Gems included, “Ken has like 12 of these,” “Quick! Take a picture,” and my personal favorite, “It looks like Rich.”

Things started winding down a bit after 4PM. Once Vanessa and Mom left, Tamara and I vegged out on the couch for a while, happy that things went well. We also enjoyed watching the last half of Bubble Boy (I really just need to go ahead and buy the DVD). This was my baby sister’s bridal shower, after all. And I will be more than happy to host Samantha’s shower at my house, if she’d like.

Once Tamara went home, I passed out, basically dozing on the couch for a few hours and managing to wake myself up in time to watch Grey’s Anatomy at 10PM. Methinks poor George is going to get his heart stomped on.
