Damn Yankees

Double Song Lyric of the Day:

I’m looking at what’s on tv / Pain and suffering and the struggle to be free / It can’t ever be denied and I never will ignore / But when I see you coming I can take it all

INXS (1977-1997) / “Disappear”

Thumbing your way to Vegas dirty / And dreaming of the other side / Save your tears and laughter / Because it doesn’t matter what you find

INXS (2005-Present) / “Pretty Vegas”

Today’s Double Song Lyric of the Day came about for a couple of reasons. One: I realized that after almost a year of blogging, I had yet to use an INXS song for my song lyric of the day. This was a huge oversight on my part, seeing as how they were my favorite band growing up. To this day, I am so very grateful I got to see them perform here in Knoxville in 1987 in support of the “Kick” world tour. I didn’t think the band should ever try to replace Michael Hutchence, but there were the surviving band members on “Rock Star: INXS” this summer trying to do just that. My curiosity got the better of me, and I ended up watching the show a few times to see which contestants were in the running. I ended up rooting for Marty Casey, but can now see why the band went with J.D. Fortune. Which leads me to my second reason for today’s Double Song Lyric of the Day. After hitting Best Buy (yes, again) and having lunch with Rich, I decided to stop by McKay’s. I was almost there when the new INXS song “Pretty Vegas” came on the radio. I was surprised by how much I liked the song; so much so, I sat in the Xterra in the parking lot until the song finished. J.D. Fortune has a much stronger voice than I initially gave him credit for. I could definitely hear shades of Michael Hutchence in his vocals, and I really like the lyrics, which he wrote. So I have decided to give the band the benefit of the doubt and see where this new journey with a new singer takes them. Maybe I’ll be even fortunate enough to catch them again on their new world tour next year.

As for today’s blog title? I can’t believe my team, the New York Yankees, lost the AL East playoffs last night. I guess this means they’re out of the running to play in this year’s World Series. I wish I could say I was more surprised, but the way this season started off, this really was almost expected. Better luck to them next year, when I hope to be in NYC and actually get to attend my first home game. Now I’m pulling for the Houston Astros to go all the way. I did live in Houston for almost 7 years, you know.

Today’s visit to Best Buy paid off in that I at least picked up the second season of “Arrested Development” on DVD. I again cr@pped out on season one of “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.” At this point, I almost consider the employee who answered my questions (on the last two visits, as well) a new friend. He told me to call Thursday morning and see if any new sets have arrived. Once I finally get a hold of it, my birthday gift cards will have been spent. It’s sure taken long enough.
