31 Day Blog Prompt Challenge Day 7

Day 7: Something you use every day.

My car? Most days. Our DVRs? Usually. My eyes? Definitely every day. My laptop? More often lately, but not every day. My brain? That’s debatable — do partial days count? (You know, those days when you just can’t seem to focus no matter what — oy vey.)  So I think I’m going to have to go with my iPad. Whether I’m using it to check email, schedule bids on eBay auctions, let Coraline play a game, waste (way too much) time playing Angry Birds Space of Plants vs. Zombies, read news stories, catch up on blogs I follow, update my own blog, or just check the weather forecast, I use my iPad every day now. Which is great, because almost immediately after I bought it I wondered if I hadn’t just bought my most expensive paperweight ever. Thankfully, that did not turn out to be the case.

Coraline playing either Monkey Preschool Lunchbox or Elmo Loves ABCs, or watching Elmo and Sesame Street videos on YouTube.

31 Day Blog Prompt Challenge Day 6

Day 6: A favorite memory.

Ah, so many favorite memories to choose from. For this blog prompt challenge, though — and because I’m such a mom now — I’m going to have to say the first time I heard Coraline cry. After a pretty great pregnancy that ended up including a preterm labor scare followed by weeks of having to take a pill every four hours around the clock to keep Miss Baby under lock and key until she was fully cooked, hearing her healthy cry was the best sound in the whole world. I remember feeling helpless on the operating table after my unplanned (but not emergency) C-section, waiting to see her, when I asked “Is she alright?” Coraline immediately responded with loud, angry cries, and I burst into tears. And now here we are 19 1/2 months later, and I am still in awe of this amazing little girl who I made from scratch.

31 Day Blog Prompt Challenge Day 5

Day 5: Your day.

Woke up, gave Coraline breakfast.

Met my parents, sis, nephew, and friend at Roman’s for our monthly pizza lunch.

Dragged sis and nephew (along with Coraline) to Bed, Bath & Beyond and then Target to pick up home necessities.

Went home, put Coraline down for a nap, and caught up on Private Practice while she slept.

Had a long-overdue Skype session with my best friend/Coraline’s godmother, Caren.

Dinner followed by outside time on the downstairs patio where Coraline kept her eyes glued on the neighbor boys playing soccer.

Put Coraline to bed, washed some dishes, and started the dishwasher (see what domesticity gets you?).

Tried to unwind.

Went outside with the spouse to take photos of Supermoon. Tada!

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Supermoon!

Came inside and wrote this post.

31 Day Blog Prompt Challenge Day 4

Day 4: An experience that made you who you are today.

This one’s a no-brainer: Giving birth to Coraline. Before Miss Baby came along, Rich and I had a great life together. But after 10 years of it being just the two of us, Coraline made our life together a fully complete one. I mean, look at this kid. How could I not be happy just being around her? She was definitely worth the wait.

Running! Outside!

31 Day Blog Prompt Challenge Day 3

Day 3: Your favorite show.

I’m going to have to say The Simpsons. It’s been on the air more than half my life at this point, and I watch reruns every night to lull me to sleep (think of it as comfort TV) thanks to the 15 seasons I have on DVD (1-14 and 20). When the day comes that its last new episode airs, I’ll probably need to go into therapy. Again.

Besides, how could I not love The Simpsons after their (locally) legendary Knoxville World’s Fair episode?

31 Day Blog Prompt Challenge Day 2

Day 2: The person (or people) that make your world go around.

I don’t want to run the risk of forgetting to list someone, so I’ll go with the weenie answer of my friends and family. But I will admit this little beauty is at the center of my world:

31 Day Blog Prompt Challenge Day 1

In order to kick myself in the proverbial pants and get back into/make time for updating ye olde blogge here on a semi-regular basis, I’m doing a 31-day blog prompt challenge. I can’t remember now where I found the list, but here it is in its entirety, followed by today’s post:

  14. One thing you want to do before you die.
  15. Something that bugs you.
  16. Your least favorite chore.
  17. Are you named after anyone?
  18. Something you are afraid of.
  19. A skill you’d like to learn.
  20. Your biggest insecurity.
  21. Something you love about yourself.

  29. Your dream vacation.
  30. Your spouse or significant other.
  31. Free day. Whatever you like!

Day 1: A photo of yourself with 10 facts.

  1. I’m writing this late at night after attending the fabulous Death Cab for Cutie/Magik*Magik Orchestra concert at the Tennessee Theatre.
  2. I’ve lived in the South for 25 years and have never tried grits.
  3. I think my naturally dark hair looks like a bad dye job when compared to my daughter’s much lighter hair.
  4. I wish sleep make-up days were a real thing and a legitimate excuse for work.
  5. I have Spidey sense when it comes to detecting unmarked/hidden police cars when I’m driving.
  6. President Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address on November 19, 1863. (Hey, the prompt list says 10 facts. It didn’t say they all have to be about me.)
  7. I love that most days at work I actually learn something new by virtue of what I edit.
  8. I’m amazed at the number of people who land on my blog by using the search term “Good Will Humping.” Especially of late. (Seriously, did they make a sequel?)
  9. I continue to hold out hope that the reality TV craze will wane. But I admit it’s been a long, frustrating wait so far.
  10. I hate that my eyes are usually so exhausted after a workday spent on the computer that it’s almost painful to read at night.

Lastly, here’s my mugshot.

Tangent

Song Lyric of the Day:

Sorry if I don’t see you / Mind me if my eyes cross you / Keep in mind I’m not here / I’m in a different zone

Ximena Sariñana / “Different

So I managed to fall off the face of the earth again, didn’t I? Last time I posted, it was Coraline’s first birthday. And, yes, I am still working on her 1st birthday letter (as well as her 13-month letter) since I got sidetracked not only by planning her birthday party but by an accompanying very large, very involved photography project. A project which I also have yet to finish. Story of my life, no?

Admittedly, I turned into a party-planning momzilla when it came to Coraline’s first birthday party — it. had. to. be. perfect. But her party went off without a hitch, and she had a blast, as did our family and friends who attended. Once I make some more progress with the aforementioned photography project, I can write a post about Coraline’s party. And some of the other stuff that’s gone on in the meantime, like an awesome visit from my best friend, Caren, who just so happens to be Coraline’s godmother. Caren, who along with Rich, got me to agree to an 11-mile bike ride around the Cades Cove Loop. A ride which I not only tried but completed. That’s right — I, a part-part-part-part-part-time biker, survived an 11-mile bike ride. My ass, on the other hand, is another story. (Dear Santa, Please bring me bike shorts for Christmas. Thanks!)

You know, all this stuff lately made me realize that a lot of the really prolific mommybloggers, the ones who earn money and free products from what they write, do not hold full-time outside jobs. I have a full-time job outside the home and only one child and can barely find the time to post on a regular basis. Which I think is why a stay-at-home mom with three kids can post however many times a day. I’m amazed by the moms who work outside the home (including one particular co-worker) who manage to blog as much as they do. I imagine all of those productive bloggers are also fueled by a crapload of coffee and quite possibly go on next to no sleep. I, on the other hand, am a total whore for my sleep, so blogging be damned. If I don’t get at least six hours, I’m not really functional. And only six hours is really pushing it. Well, that was an odd little side tangent, wasn’t it?  See, that’s what happens when I don’t get enough sleep.

Now to get to bed, try to get at least 7 1/2 hours of sleep, and try to remember to blog again tomorrow.

Finally Made the Jump

I did it. I finally made the switch from Blogger to my custom URL here on WordPress. I wasn’t unhappy with Blogger — far from it — but I really wanted to be able to host my own URL on Rich’s server, which wasn’t possible with Blogger. So here we are. Bear with me as I get used to WordPress. In other words, the look of my blog may very well change every other day or so for awhile until I get things figured out. Time to settle in.

Epiphany

Song Lyric of the Day:

I’ve / Become so numb / I can’t feel you there / Become so tired / So much more aware / I’m becoming this / All I want to do / Is be more like me / And be less like you

Linkin Park / “Numb”

Last month I celebrated a milestone birthday. The epiphany that has been gestating for a few months crystallized. I am no longer satisfied just working for a living. I want a career that challenges me, fulfills me, and interests me. For almost a year I had that as a Technical Writer at my company’s corporate office in Virginia Beach. I was given the opportunity to learn different graphics programs, including Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat, and ClearEdge. I not only enjoyed learning these programs, I enjoyed using what I learned to finalize technical manuals for delivery to our client. Not only did I have a fun job that I loved, I worked closely with three great people with whom I am still good friends.

Now I work in our Hampton office. I am still a Technical Writer, but I do not actually get to write anything. Or edit anything, for that matter. I certainly don’t work with any graphics programs. Transferring to this office was not something I wanted to do, but had to do. In government contracting, there are no guarantees. You go where the contracts take you. In my case, that’s a 52-mile round trip drive every day.

If I could go back in time, I’d find my college advisor and beat the sh!t out of him for encouraging me to pursue my English degree in Technical Writing. If I could have seen into the future and known this kind of professional malaise and ennui was what my degree would get me, I would have studied something else.

Granted, I am not living in an area known as a hotbed of magazine or book publishing. Moving to New York City or Chicago to pursue that is out of the question at this time. So I make do with this.

What would I go back and study instead of Technical Writing?

Forensics, maybe. I’ve been interested in forensics since high school, long before The New Detectives and CSI became a part of our pop culture.

Drama, maybe. In the past year I have acted in a couple of locally filmed TV shows filmed at New Dominion Pictures in Suffolk. Turns out that pretending to be a Medical Examiner’s Clerk and a Bad Guy’s Girlfriend is infinitely more interesting than being in a cube all day.

Maybe I’d just do what I’d wanted to do in the first place and major in Creative Writing. Again, a pox on my advisor for advising me to switch to Technical Writing. “No one will hire you if they see ‘B.A. in Creative Writing’ listed on your resume,” he said. Sigh.

Some people feel a calling to help others and become teachers, cops, nurses, doctors. Others want to serve our judicial system and become lawyers or judges. Still others find work to suit their mechanical skills and abilities.

Me, I can tell you who directed, wrote, starred in, and produced a movie or TV show. More often than not, I can even tell you what year it was released or aired.

What am I supposed to do with that? Other than play lots of trivia games and visit IMDB.com a lot.

That is my big dilemma: what to be when I grow up.

Hopefully, I’ll figure that out soon enough.

Fear not. I will not use this blog solely to whine about my lot in my professional life.

I have plenty of other stuff to talk about. Really.
