Faves: ’90s Music

Song Lyric of the Day:

I search myself / I want you to find me / I forget myself / I want you to remind me

The Divinyls / “I Touch Myself”

A while back I blogged about some of my favorite ’80s music videos. And while it’s true that I listen to ’80s music a lot, I also listen to a lot of music from the ’90s. Whereas ’80s music defined my childhood, ’90s music defined my high school, college, and young adult life; it was the music I listened to as I figured out who I was, what I wanted to do in life, where I wanted to be. Maybe I’ll blog in the future about music from the year 2000 on. Otherwise known as the music I listen to while I figure out what I want to be when I grow up.

I’ve excluded some songs that are really obvious and cliched (buh-bye, “Smells Like Teen Spirit”) and wasn’t able to include some due to disabled embedding (honestly — who doesn’t allow embedding these days?). I’m also sparing you my long-dead love-of-all-things-grunge: Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and the rest of their ilk. Regardless, here are some of my favorite songs and videos from the ’90s.

10. “Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)” – US3
As a non-jazz fan — a fact that I’m surprised hasn’t caused my father to disown me — I love US3’s jazzy, peppy, and wholly original “Cantaloop.” And all these years after its release, I still think the voice at the start of the song introducing “a recording from Blue Note Records” sounds a lot like a young Gary Coleman. Don’t ask me why.

9. “Enter Sandman” – Metallica
Metallica is probably the first heavy metal band of which I was really a fan (okay, after Def Leppard in their glory days). This is the video that convinced me I just had to hear more from them; I even attended a concert they put on here in Knoxville. I doubt I’ll ever see a coffin-shaped stage again.

8. “Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth With Money in My Hand” – Primitive Radio Gods
All-around cool and probably the only real hit for which the Primitive Radio Gods are known, my ears perked up when I heard this during the movie The Cable Guy. The slow, trippy beat does a great job of complementing the B.B. King song it samples, “How Blue Can You Get?”.

7. “Happy When It Rains” – Garbage
This song pleased the mopey, pessimistic goth girl within to no end, and I’ve been a fan of everything Garbage has done since. I was thrilled to finally see them in concert a few years ago in Norfolk, VA, because lead singer Shirley Manson not only has an amazingly strong voice in person, but because she’s an all-around talented badass. And the band as a whole rocks. Here’s hoping they decide to make some new music again.

6. “Buddy Holly” – Weezer
Weezer’s blue album was played nonstop in my college dorm room; their music was a very bright, peppy contrast to most of the darker music I listened to at the time (see: Garbage, Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, Depeche Mode, et al). Fun videos and great music — both of which they still continue to produce — are what’s kept me a loyal Weezer fan all these years.

5. “I Touch Myself” – The Divinyls
One of the best songs to sing along to if you want to make other people uncomfortable. Brought renewed attention to that niche of specialty music: the ode to self-love. See also: “Shock the Monkey,” “She-Bop,” “Turning Japanese,” etc.

4. “Lightning Crashes” – Live
I fell in love with Live’s music beginning with “Selling the Drama,” but it was the insta-classic “Lightning Crashes” that convinced me the band would be around for the long run. I’m still a fan, and singing along with the crowd to this song at their concert in Virginia Beach a few years ago was a moment I’ll forever treasure.

3. “Freedom” – George Michael
Long before he started hanging out in public restrooms as a hobby, George Michael was known for making music. Really good music. “Freedom” was his ode to the downside of music stardom, and he went the ironic route by choosing not to appear in the video at all, instead having well-known models lip-sync to the song. At least his leather jacket from “Faith” made an appearance.

2. “Deeper Shade of Soul” – Urban Dance Squad
Who would’ve thought that a Dutch band sampling Ray Barretto‘s classic song, “A Deeper Shade of Soul,” and setting it to a hybrid sound including hip-hop, ska, funk, and rap would result in such a fun song? I love this song so much it almost makes me giddy, I think it’s so much fun to listen to. And sing along to. And dance to. Also to avoid being caught singing or dancing to (that’s for the spouse). Now if only I could get my hands on an MP3 of it, my music library would be complete.

1. “Me Myself & I” – De La Soul
A classic any way you look at it, this was one of my anthems (if you will) throughout the ’90s. It’s that rare song that cheers me up every time I hear it. Also notable for what is quite possibly the shortest Q-Tip cameo I know of (three words long). This is another essential song I need to add to my iTunes library.

Faves: Workout Playlist Songs

Song Lyric of the Day:

When I come through on the dance floor checkin’ out that catalog / Can’t believe my eyes, so many women without a flaw

Lady Gaga / “Just Dance

If you follow my Twitter stream at all, you’ll know that today I had very sore arms. Why is that? Because I’m trying to get back on track with my workout regimen. So last night’s overhead tricep extensions did a number on my upper arms. My abs are also feeling a bit sore today; I’m now up to 90 crunches, working my way back up to the 150 I used to do daily.

It’s not easy going, but I’m seeing results, and the spouse is seeing results, so that’s providing some good motivation. What really helps motivate me throughout my workouts, though, is a fun, fast-paced playlist. Here are my top 10 current favorite songs to listen to while working out.

“Give It 2 Me” by Madonna
She may be looking a bit scary these days (ahem), but this song gets my vote for favorite song on her album Hard Candy.

“Strict Machine” by Goldfrapp
This is a slightly slower song — although not by much — but it’s got a smooth, ethereal beat that’s great for establishing a pace when on the treadmill.

“Chelsea Dagger” by the Fratellis
Flat-out fun, much like the whole album Costello Music, one of my all-time favorites. These Scots know how to rock.

“Feeling So Real” by Moby
This is one of my all-time Moby faves, which also has a prominent place on my techno-centric workout playlist. Among the faster tracks on my playlist, I usually listen to this when I’m at my max speed on the treadmill.

“Ready Steady Go” by Paul Oakenfold
This is the song that makes me want to fly down the highway when driving. I blame The Bourne Identity.

“Song 2” by Blur
What do you need when you’re working out? A chorus of “woohoo” urging you on.

“Cobrastyle” by Teddybears
Used in countless TV promos, this song is as catchy as they come. Even if you can’t understand a lot of the lyrics.

“Setting Sun” by the Chemical Brothers
Noel Gallagher’s vocals helped make this the Chemical Brothers’ first number one song, kicking off a productive partnership that yielded other favorites, including “Let Forever Be.”

“We Are Rockstars” by Does It Offend You, Yeah?
This reminds me a bit of Daft Punk’s “Harder Better Faster Stronger” thanks in part to the synthesized vocals. And I admit — I had to track this song down after hearing it in the trailer for the new Fast & Furious movie. (See bonus video at the end of this post if you haven’t seen it yet.)

“Great DJ” by the Ting Tings
I love how the choreography in the video is so laid-back; it’s a nice contrast to how fast-paced the song is. Which is one of many reasons I love listening to this (among other songs by the Ting Tings) when working out.

*Here’s the trailer for Fast & Furious. Paul Walker’s so pretty. That’s all. He’s pretty. Really, really pretty. Sigh.

Building My Music Library One Free Song at a Time

Song Lyric of the Day:

I love no one / And no one loves me

The Breeders / “Bang On”

I’m always on the lookout for new music to beef up my iTunes library. If a song and/or artist is new to me and free, all the better. After all, I’ve gotten quite a few really great songs for free from iTunes’ weekly freebies: “Espacio Sideral” by Jesse & Joy, “All That Matters” by Addison Road, “Seven Days of Lonely” by I Nine, and, more recently, “Great DJ” by The Ting Tings and “Hometown Glory” by Adele. Speaking of The Ting Tings, how much did I love their U.S. TV debut last weekend on Jimmy Kimmel Live!? The spouse agrees with me that singer Katie White was totally channeling Deborah Harry in Blondie’s heyday.

Being a daily reader of the New York Post online (primarily for Page Six but also the local news — have to keep up with my hometown goings-on), I was happy to recently discover their MPFrees weekly feature. Every Tuesday, the Post offers a few songs free for downloading; they also include links to purchase the artists’ albums. I’m still kicking myself over forgetting to download the new single by The Submarines, but today I did download Adele’s cover of The Strokes song “Last Nite,” “Bang On” by The Breeders, and “I’m Amazed” by My Morning Jacket. (All this talk of Adele recently; I’ll have to check out her album.) And I do plan on picking up the new album by The Fratellis, Here We Stand, this week (it dropped today); the best prices I’ve found so far are $7.99 at Best Buy and $8.99 at Buy.com.

The New York Post‘s weekly MPFrees are available for download every Tuesday through Friday.

And if you’re looking for new country music, be sure to check out my friend Wendy Newcomer’s writeup on AOL’s new country music section, The Boot (scroll down — she’s in the right margin under Discover New Country). And don’t forget to swing by her MySpace page — Wendy’s quite the talented singer/songwriter.

Brit Music Rocks

Song Lyric of the Day:

I ain’t freakin’ / I ain’t fakin’ this / Shut up and let me go / Hey! / Shut up and let me go / This hurts, but I can’t show / For the last time you had me in bits / Now shut up and let me go!

The Ting Tings / “Shut Up and Let Me Go”

As my friend Caren pointed out a while back, I’ve become something of a music Anglophile. I still enjoy music by American bands and artists, of course, but lately my favorite bands and artists have all just happened to be British. True to form, tonight I bought The Ting Tings‘ debut album, We Started Nothing, on iTunes. I love the song “Shut Up and Let Me Go,”* featured in the new iPod commercial (I can totally dance like that when no one’s looking), but the clincher was seeing the video for “Great DJ” on VH1 the other day. As expected, the album is as fun and catchy as the first two songs hinted.

I also recently picked up Duffy‘s album, Rockferry. Duffy has a great, retro, ’60’s girl-band sound. She’s like the light to Amy Winehouse’s dark. And she’s sober, to boot. Her single, “Mercy,” is all over the place; it’s been used in half this season’s TV promos and was featured in the Grey’s Anatomy season finale.

I’ve also heard a couple of singles by Adele, who has the most amazing voice I’ve heard in a while; I look forward to hearing more from her. The video for her single, “Chasing Pavements,” fascinates me, revolving around the concept of sidewalk dancing.

Of course, I can’t wait for next week and the week after that, when the new albums from The Fratellis and Coldplay drop, respectively. As much as I love the first single, “Violet Hill,” I would’ve bought Viva La Vida just based on the song featured in Coldplay’s iTunes commercial.

Who am I kidding? It’s the new album from Coldplay — I would’ve bought it sound unheard.

*The puppy and I are working on a dance routine to this song. He’s an awesome, albeit reluctant, little dancer.

The VLA’s "When I Am Through With You" — for Download!

9:33AM.
I’ve ragged on MySpace before, but I will give it credit where it’s due: Were it not for MySpace, I never would’ve been able to contact the very accommodating Jason Rabe, lead singer for the VLA, to get the complete lyrics to their song, “When I Am Through With You.” Since the song is currently best-known as the theme song for Damages (which I love), people from all over are always landing on my blog looking for the lyrics (which I posted several months ago).

Lately I’ve also gotten some e-mails from people asking if I know where they can download the song (I’m not sure how well MySpace’s download function works), so I once again contacted Jason. Lo and behold, he sent me an MP3. He told me to enjoy blogging it, sharing it, posting it. So here it is. Enjoy listening to and sharing the song. And be sure to swing by the VLA’s MySpace page to say thanks.

UPDATED: I re-added the MP3 below since it appears to have been lost when I switched from Blogger to WordPress.

When I am Through With You - The VLA

*If you have trouble downloading the song, click on the Email Me link in the left nav bar, and I’ll do my best to send it to you sometime this weekend.

Time to Blow This Popsicle Stand

Song Lyric of the Day:

Vacation / All I ever wanted / Vacation / Had to get away / Vacation / Meant to be spent alone

Go-Go’s / “Vacation

10:26AM.
It’s finally time for mio vacanza, and not a second too soon. My brain is on overload and needs a break.

Caren and I will be leaving work no later than noon to hit the road to Atlanta. We’ll be staying in the Buckhead area, which looks pretty nice based on what I’ve seen online. It’ll be nice to finally explore the city a bit, since the only other times I’ve been there have been to go either to Six Flags (which is closed this weekend — wankers) or to IKEA. Come Saturday, we’ll head to Chattanooga. I’ve explored Chattanooga more than I have Atlanta, but we’ll be hitting some new areas this time around, so I’m looking forward to that.

Last night I went through my pre-travel ritual of freaking out over how much clothes to pack (extra underwear — always); whether to bring my MacBook or not (decided on not); packing all the camera accessories (including extra batteries); making sure bills are paid up; quadruple-checking that I didn’t forget anything; etc. At least I restrained myself — mostly, anyway — from lecturing Rich on how to keep the kids alive (if Buster stares at you in the kitchen in the morning, he wants treats; remember that Caleb poops after he eats his breakfast). Yes, I’m one of those people.

I also synced (see, honey, I used the right word!) my iPod to make sure every bit of music I have in my iTunes library will be accompanying me on the road. Caren is also bringing her iPod, so between the two of those and our car audio adapter, we’re all set for music. As it is, the other day she essentially called me a music Anglophile since five out of the six discs in my CD changer are by Brits or British in nature. I’ve got the Layer Cake soundtrack (yes, again), Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen, Paul Oakenfold, and The Fratellis in heavy rotation at the moment. And I just discovered a cool site I can use to discover more Anglophile bands. What can I say? I’m enjoying the music they’re putting out these days more so than my stateside counterparts. Although they are accompanied by California’s Linkin Park at the moment, a disc that is likely to be replaced by either Franz Ferdinand (Scottish) or Snow Patrol (Irish) at the drop of a hat.
